The craft aspect of my work is an obvious integral part in the execution of my work, but it’s a means to an end. I certainly pay attention to it, but the work must first of all be able to convey its artistic idea – it must constitute a sculptural presence that communicate directly to the viewer. I have always been very fond of working with the culturally rich ceramics tradition as my backdrop, having trained and working originally with functional objects.
My personal itinerary with the material is representative of a development over the last 35 years, where an open-mindedness to a wide range of artistic expressions of high quality has replaced more dogmatic crafts views of the 1970ies when I first got involved with the applied arts scene. Although it now seems less relevant to discuss the crafts/ fine arts relationship and the art politics implied, I still think it is helpful to be conscious of and reflect on the role of these different traditions for the cultural weight and significance of your enterprise.
